On the Days When I Don't Wake Up Feeling Thankful...

Because there are days when I just don't wake up feeling thankful...

Recognizing the Gifts...

The boy straightening mom's corner, "just because"

~ A rare whole 45 minutes to teach my Sunday School lesson...and girls digging into the Word so deeply we run out of time regardless!

~ Disappointment turned to delight...having to sit out of choir, but getting to actually *hear* the choir sing...and  seeing so many of our youth (including one of mine!) scattered through the choir...such a blessing!

~ Sermon-reminder, once again, that "He showcases His mercy..."  It's all mercy...

~ Husband who loves to cook, and does it so well. :)

~ Crazy cards, perfect pens, sweet treat...encouraging friend = encouraged heart

~ Sharpies...enough said. :)

~ Unexpectedly cooler afternoon and a few minutes to sit and enjoy our backyard wildlife, camera in hand...promise of cooler days and enjoyable moments to come...

~ Woodpecker sighting, times 2...little things bringing big smiles :)

~ Big-girl birthdays

~ Little girl "puppy tails" (Harris-ese for pigtails :))

~ Visit with friends we don't see often enough

~ Almost-empty calendar for the week ahead...a most welcome breather...

~ Sunday School "rabbit trail"...."God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." ...Pondering today...He didn't just carry our sin on the cross...He became it...every bit...so that...we might become His righteousness.  What an unbelievable trade...simple words but huge truth to get my mind around...

~ The privilege of homeschooling...so easy to get bogged down in the responsibility and forget the blessing!  Purposing to focus on that this week...

~ Faithful prayer warriors, answered prayers, and watching for God's work from here...

~ And always grace...because  even the grace to recognize the gifts comes from Him.

Has it really been a decade?? Happy 10th, Emlyn!!

My Sweet Emlyn,

Has it really been a decade since your arrival?  In one way, I can't imagine life without you here, but in another, it seems like I barely blinked and you are half grown. :)

I remember finding out we were expecting you...I was so excited, and yet a bit anxious.  Daddy's job was in transition, we would have to have a new vehicle, as our only car wouldn't hold three carseats, and the thought of three children under four was a bit overwhelming.  And if I'd known what my pregnancy with you was going to hold, I would have been even more overwhelmed, I think...but God is good *not* to show us everything at once. :)

Early bedrest, an infection that landed me in the hospital (with the worst experience EVER with a potassium IV), a minor wreck, breaking my ankle and wearing a boot for six weeks...seven weeks before your due date (Dr. Muylaert sweated bullets over that one...he was so worried that you were going to come a bit early and he was going to have to deal with babying a broken ankle in the midst of delivery. :)), and then discovering at the very end that you were transverse...yours was definitely the most *interesting* pregnancy I'd had to that point (although your sister worked hard to show you up a couple of years later! :))

However, in the midst of all of that, God was teaching me so much!  He brought me from anxiety to peace (over and over again, as I'm a bit of a slow learner), and then at the end, brought me face-to-face with one of my great pregnancy fears...having a c-section.  And how like our God that despite the crazy pregnancy and dreaded c-section, yours was my easiest recuperation of all!

The first thing we noticed about you was the hair.  Oh, that hair!  Peter said it was "like smoke blowing", and a man at church said, "That baby has Choctaw hair!"  It was, and you did.  We called it your "Indian hair", and it seemed appropriate since you are so much like my Choctaw grandmother.  Your eyes turned from their original very dark blue at birth to her very distinctive cornflower blue shortly afterward...such beautiful eyes!  It took them a long, long time to change to their current hazel...we thought they might actually stay blue.  But they are still beautiful, and you still remind me of Granny Marks in many ways.

You've always been the calmest and most placid of your siblings.  You're much more of a homebody than they are, as well.  You love "little things", just like Granny Marks did...and when you called yesterday and excitedly told me about the little injured bird you'd rescued at Mamoe's house, you reminded me of Granny all over again!  You were so thrilled that it had been able to fly away on its own.

As you are growing older, I am seeing a whole new side of your personality come out...a quiet, focused determination relating to a goal.  You have a passion for taking care of people (and animals, and birds...:)), and a strong heart for missions, and you have been very focused in the last year or two on your dream of being a medical missionary.   For your birthday yesterday, you took part of your birthday money and bought a real blood pressure cuff...the old fashioned kind...and you were so excited for Mamoe and Daddy to teach you how to use it.

As we did with all of you, Daddy and I very carefully considered your name.  I had always wanted to use the name "Emma",  after my great-grandmother and Aunt Emma Jo.  But...right before Bayley was born, friends at church named their daughter Emma, so we took it off our list.  When we were searching for names for you, I ran across a list of "archaic" names, and saw the name Emlyn (with many variations and spellings).  I immediately loved it, as it combined the "Emma" I had so wanted to use with my middle name.  The bonus was that it was Welch...your Papaw Brown had Welch ancestry and had always loved Welch names.  Daddy loved it, too, so it went to the top of our list. :)

Emlyn means "to strive or excel".  Two things come to mind about that this morning...the way you are "striving" to be prepared for what God has for you, and a letter your Papaw wrote to me when I was born, which talked about striving to be "excellent" in all we do...not doing things half-heartedly, but heartily as unto the Lord.

Your middle name is "Olivia", which means "peace".  So appropriate for your peaceful personality, but it goes beyond that as well.  The top middle name on our list for you was "Taylor".  There were various reasons behind that name, and we both loved the combination Emlyn Taylor.  But...after Daddy came back in from calling Nonna and Granddad to tell them you had arrived, I said, "I think we need to use Emlyn Olivia instead."  Daddy surprisingly agreed, and we made the change.  I wanted a forever reminder of the peace that God had given while I was lying on the table during that c-section.  It's been a good reminder during later "bumps in the road" of your young life as well.

I don't know if God's plan for you includes medical missions on the foreign field, but I do know that He has a very special plan for you for which He is preparing your heart and life even now.  I can't wait to see what that is!

Happy Birthday, Sweet Em!!  I love you so much, and I am so excited about God's work in your life "from the first day until now"...and from now on!

I love you,

Mom

Five Minute Friday..."New"

Still working on Emlyn's birthday blog and a host of other projects, but this song and these verses have been on my mind this morning, and when I ran across the Five Minute Friday prompt this morning and saw that it was "new", I decided I had to post this super-quickly. So...I'm linking up with Gypsy Mama today as she encourages us to...

"take five minutes and see what comes out:  No extreme editing; no worrying about perfect grammar, font, or punctuation. Just painting with words. Finger-painting even.not a perfect post, not a profound post, just five minutes of focused writing.  For only five minutes."

A friend posted this song on Facebook the other day.  I immediately decided it was one of my "new favorites" (to add to my list of 587 favorite songs already...:)).  I've listened to it many times this week...

LOVE those words.  So the other morning, I decided to go back to some of the Scriptures from which they are taken...Isaiah 40 and Job 38.

It didn't even register when I saw "Isaiah 40".  I first read verses 12-15:

12 Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand,
or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens?
Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket,
or weighed the mountains on the scales
and the hills in a balance?
13 Who has understood the mind of the LORD,
or instructed him as his counselor?
14 Whom did the LORD consult to enlighten him,
and who taught him the right way?
Who was it that taught him knowledge
or showed him the path of understanding?
 15 Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket;
   they are regarded as dust on the scales;
he weighs the islands as though they were fine dust.

What amazing verses about the true awesomeness of our God...there just aren't adequate words to describe His big-ness (not a word, I'm sure, but the only way I know to say it :)), His power, His majesty, His might.

Then I "zoomed out" to the entire chapter, and had one of those "head slap" moments.  Those verses come right after what has been one of my favorite verses for over six years now...the verse Jodie sent me two days before my dad died...the verse I have clung through during some deep, dark valleys since...Isaiah 40:11:

He tends his flock like a shepherd:
He gathers the lambs in his arms
and carries them close to his heart;
he gently leads those that have young.

As I read the chapter as a whole, I was just totally overwhelmed by the picture it presented.  I think it is one of the most beautiful chapters in the Bible.  I have loved "pieces" of it for years...not only verse 11, but verse 1, and verses 3-5, which are the bases for more than one of my favorite musical compositions, and then of course, closing with the beautiful words of Isaiah 40:29-31:

29 He gives strength to the weary
and increases the power of the weak.
30 Even youths grow tired and weary,
   and young men stumble and fall;
31 but those who hope in the LORD
   will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.

But the other morning, I was just overwhelmed not by the individual verses, but by the totality of the chapter.  Some of the most beautiful verses in the Bible about God's comfort and care of His people, interspersed among verses about His power, might, justice, strength, and majesty.   I just love the reminder of the hugeness of God and the tininess (are those words?  Blogger seems to think so...:)) of man...and yet, His perfect care and comfort of us.  I love the way that God takes verses that we have heard all our lives and makes them totally new and fresh for us...just when we need them the most.

Well, I've had several interruptions while typing this, so I've completely lost track of how long I've actually spent on it..but I haven't edited, or worked on composition (obviously :)), and I don't *think* it's been much longer than five minutes of actual typing. :-)  Regardless...I needed to stop and think about this this morning...lots of things weighing on my mind today...personal, family, and friends with heavy burdens.  I needed the juxtaposition this chapter provides of God's greatness and majesty, and His amazing care and comfort of the people He created.  Good stuff to focus on today...thankful for this reminder that He is continually making all things new...

Guy Penrod...

(In which I elaborate on Sunday night's Facebook status: Worn. Teetotally. Out. But it was SO very worth it! No way I'm going to get 456 photos edited/uploaded tonight, but I'm hoping to do a *few* before I crash completely. Thank you, Mrs. Jodie, for Bayley's super-fun birthday surprise (and Mr. John for staying with Mrs. Shirley so we could go)!!! Not just fun, but a wonderful worship experience...not sure I've ever taken notes at a concert before! :))

It all started last winter.  My friend Jodie was unexpectedly and seemingly randomly given tickets to hear Guy Penrod sing in Van Buren.  "You know, the guy with the long  hair from the Gaither Vocal Band!" she said when she called me.

I guess it actually started a little before that.  Jodie had started watching Gaither Homecoming DVDs with her MIL, who had recently moved into their home due to issues with dementia.  I was sitting with S a couple of times a week, and had begun watching the videos when I was there with her as well.

Neither of us had been particularly interested in the GVB or Gaither Homecomings before that, but thanks to our "Gaither sessions" with S, I at least knew who she was talking about! :)  However, the concert ended up being a huge blessing to J, and her excitement about it was contagious.   It wasn't the hair, or the voice, she said more than once, it was his genuineness, a seemingly very real and open heart for God.

From there, the whole Guy Penrod thing kind of mushroomed.  Partly just silly fun during some stressful days, partly a real admiration for this singer who seems to have such a genuine heart for the Lord along with an incredible voice and some amazing hair.  (Which is pretty hilarious, considering no one involved has ever been particularly fond of long hair on men...?? :-D)   Not to mention the fact that I (and several other homeschooling moms I know) absolutely FELL. IN. LOVE. with Guy and Angie Penrod's "little red schoolhouse" that is just down the {lush, rolling, green} hill from their farmhouse.  That and the video footage of their seven boys (before their only girl was born) singing beautiful a cappella harmony in the kitchen of said farmhouse while fixing breakfast.  *Sigh* :)

After watching Mrs. Jodie's "Best of Guy Penrod" DVD, Bayley became a fan as well.  So when Jodie discovered that Guy Penrod was going to be in concert at FBC, Lavaca, on the weekend of Bay's birthday, the wheels began to spin...:)

And on Sunday afternoon, Bayley and I found ourselves walking up the sidewalk to Mrs. Jodie's house.  Bayley thought we were there to visit Mrs. Shirley...which we were.  She just didn't know that rather than having a short visit and then going back to church, we would be heading the other direction to see Guy Penrod. :)

Things started getting exciting even before we walked in the door.  Bayley was walking in front of me, and I heard her squeal.  I thought she'd seen a spider.  Nope, it was a lizard.   And the next thing I hear is "It just slid under the door, Mom!"  I told her we had to make sure Mr. John or Levi got it fast...Mrs. Jodie does NOT like lizards.  Mr. John opened the door and we pointed in the general direction the lizard had gone and told him about their uninvited houseguest.  He took over from there, with only minimal torturing of Mrs. Jodie with it before taking it back outside. :)

The lizard

Then Mrs. Jodie gave Bayley her birthday cards.  Yes, cards.  7 of them...6 with the letters of her first name on the envelopes, to be opened in order, each containing one word, and the 7th a more traditional birthday card.

The lettered cards said:

Let's...

Go...

See...

Guy...

When she got to this one, she said, "I know what the next one says!"

Penrod...

"What is Mrs. Jodie up to???"

tonight!!

You just don't quite get the full effect without the audio here...you'll have to imagine the squeals. :)

So, after a brief visit with Mrs. Shirley, Jodie, Hannah, Bayley, and I set out for Lavaca.  We were going to stop by Mrs. Shirley's house in LA and then be at the church when they opened for seating at 5.  We were running a bit early, though, so Jodie said, "I think we'll drive by the church and see if his bus is there on the way to the house."

"Wait a minute!" Bayley interrupted.  "Do you mean Guy Penrod is going to be there LIVE and IN PERSON???"

Bless her heart, she thought we were going to a simulcast or some such thing.

Now she was *really* excited!  :-D

We decided to do group pictures when we went by the house, rather than when we got to church.  Jodie has done SO MUCH WORK on this house, and it is looking SO GOOD.  I love these bookcases. :)

We arrived at the church right on time, found good seats, and then the girls took off to the sales table.  Hannah came back so excited..."They have keychains!"  I wish I'd gotten a picture of the look on her face at that point, but this one was pretty cute, too. :)

Then we waited, and visited, and asked Jodie about three thousand times for the official "Guy Penrod Time" to see how much longer we had to wait. :)  (J has a picture of GP signing her CD cover at the Van Buren concert as the wallpaper on her phone, which is also how she keeps track of the time.  On a recent outing, Mrs. Pam dubbed it "GPT". :))

And then, it was finally 6:00.   I tried to get a picture of Bayley's face when she actually saw GP walk out on stage, but my camera wouldn't cooperate.   Suffice it to say, it was obvious that Mrs. Jodie had made a good choice in her birthday surprise. :)

The concert itself was wonderful.  It truly was more worship service than concert.  Of course, I usually don't take pictures of Bro. Kent while he is preaching (and Guy did give a few mini-sermons between songs :)), nor do I usually take pictures of Lyndel while he's leading the song service...but then, I've never taken notes during a concert before, either.

Here are a few of the ones I took at this one...quotes from Guy Penrod during the evening...

"I submit to you that if you're sucking air, you're a person of faith.  The question is...where have you placed it?"

His guitarists are really excellent.

"We are more than just human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spirit beings having a very temporal experience."

"Man is a funny little bunch..."  (I'm hoping that Jodie or Hannah remembers what he said that in reference to...I wrote that part down, thinking I'd remember the rest, and then of course didn't.)

"That's the devil's biggest weapon...to convince you he doesn't exist!"

"I'm not one of these people who thinks there's a demon behind every bush.........I think there are a hundred!"

With my kids seemingly growing up at the speed of light, the song "Are You the One?"  was such a good and timely reminder to me.  So was this comment: "If you can't make it work at home, what're you gonna export it for?"  I need to be reminded often where our first priorities must be.

"When God gives you a dream, it's usually so big that it completely flips you out...and that's the point!  Only God can do it!!

"Let you happen to life, not life happen to you."

Another reminder I need often is in the area of prayer.  He sang the old hymn (the first one I learned to play on the piano as a beginning piano student, btw :)) "Sweet Hour of Prayer" and his new single, "Pray About Everything", and talked about Philippians 4:4-7 and Matthew 6:35-34.  God has been dealing with me, yet again, in the area of my prayer life recently, and I so needed to hear what was said/sung Sunday night.

There is so much more I could say about the concert itself, but since I've already written a book, I'll save some for later. :)  (That is actually code for "There's a lot I can't remember at this moment, so I'll leave myself an out to come back with what I forgot later." :))    It truly was a worship experience, and when Jodie said on the way to the car, "NOW do you see what I meant?", we all did.  As Pastor Tony said at the end, "My favorite thing about this man is no longer his music...my favorite thing about this man is his heart for God."  We had a LOT of fun...we laughed hard from the lizard until we finally left Jodie's house late that evening...but we also left the church encouraged and challenged.

Breathe deep...
Breathe deep...
Moments like these are treasures to keep...
Listen close, look long.
Breathe deep.
~Don Poythress, Barry Dean, Tony Wood

Treasures to keep, indeed...

Waiting in line to get her picture autographed...

We ran into Kristin and Payton and Perri there. :)  Not sure what Jodie and Kristin  are talking about here, but they  sure  are intent about it!

A very happy birthday girl (with the "icing on the cake"...her very own box of Star Crunches :))

(Thank you, again, Mrs. Jodie, for the wonderful birthday surprise, Hannah for going along and adding to the fun...and being good-natured about hearing a million times during the night, "I'm taller than Hannah!!" :), and Mr. John for staying with S so we could go!)
